Description In pre-mongolian era, the title tsar was attributed to foreign rulers, or was used rarely also for Russian princes without ambition to gain the title. Under Tartar yoke, the title was bestowed on the supreme ruler of Russia, that is the Sarai khan, and the notion of tsar as supreme ruler was strengthened. From the half of 15th century, and because of the tsars will to be independent rulers, the tsar dignity began to be percieved as byzantine heritage, taken over when Byzantium still had its glory. Politically, the acceptance of the title tsar was connected with the confrontation with the Horde. The tsardom was at that time being supplemented with evidence of tsar dignity s antiquity in the lines of Mosciovia princes and their relation to Roman emperores.
