| Description | The concept of the metaphorical meaning should explain why we understand metaphors. Donald Davidson argued that such an concept is no explanation. In this paper I want to examine roots of his argument by Nietzsche and Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein's secondary meaning resembles the idea of the metaphorical meaning. On the basis of Wittgenstein's argumentation I shall propose a modification of the metaphorical meaning in order to escape Davidson's critique. The metaphorical meaning should express something general about the metaphor as such, not about this or that partikular metaphor. |
