Description The teachings and practices of Shugendó have taken shape under the influence of a great variety of religious traditions of ancient Japan, such as belief in kami and mountain worship, as well as the foreign Buddhist, Taoist and Shamanistic traditions. This paper deals with an examination of the Shugedó school by means of contrasting Shintó and Buddhism, the two major religious traditions of Japan. I will attempt to demonstrate the process of proliferation of various religious ideas in the Japanese environment via introducing and investigating key Shugendó rituals and practices.
