Description This paper deals with the issue of the role of the Óbaku sect of Zen Buddhism in Japan in the beginning of the Tokugawa period (1603-1868). By means of examining the circumstances of the establishment of the Óbaku sect as a separate school of Zen Buddhism outside the Rinzai order we shall discover the importance and varieties of Zen praxis as demonstrated by each school in the Tokugawa period.
