The Impact of Parenting Style on Self-Esteem and Classroom Social Status in Early Adolescents

Description The paper deals with relationships existing among the perceived manner of upbringing within the family on the one hand and pupil's self-esteem and his/her position within the class on the other. This study was implemented within a set of 384 pupils of primary schools in the age of 13 – 15 years. Respondents filled up the Questionnaire for the survey of the way of upbringing within the family (Čáp, Boschek, 1994), the Czech version of Coopersmith's self-esteem questionnaire (Coopersmith, 1981), and the Sociometric questionnaire. The obtained results demonstrated a connection between the perceived manner of family upbringing and the level of self-esteem of pupils. In this context it was also demonstrated that there were differences due to the sex of respondents. However, the link between the perceived manner of family upbringing and the social position of pupils in the class could not be fully proved. The only significant relationships were the emotional relationship of the father to the child and the overall emotional relationships existing within the family.
