This degree programme contains four disciplines focusing on issues relating to the study of English philology:

language skills | linguistics | literary studies | cultural studies

Within each of these areas, students take a number of compulsory courses followed up with a a wide range of selective and elective courses. The compulsory courses provide general introductions and the necessary theoretical background to work in the specific discipline in question. Selective courses focus on specific topics within each of the disciplines. In addition, students have the opportunity to take a number of type elective courses of their own choice. All teaching, coursework, and exams in this degree programme are carried out in the English language.

A successful graduate is able to

Have deep knowledge of the literatures, cultures, and histories of the major English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia.

In addition to working in editing, copy writing, teaching English, translation and interpreting, journalism, and tourism, our graduates are well-suited for any profession that requires ability for independent and critical thinking.

Courses

The First Year is composed of compulsory courses introducing students to the basic concepts and notions in the fields of the study. These course prepare the students for their studies in the following years.

In the 2nd and 3rd years of the Bachelor’s degree, there are several compulsory courses and the rest are optional (students can choose to register courses according to their own interests). At the end of their studies, students write a Bachelor’s diploma thesis which is defended in front of a state exam committee, and pass the final Bachelor’s state exam which consists of four written exams in literature, linguistics, cultural studies, and the English language.

Students are obliged to gain 4 credits in Philosophy and 2 credits in Physical Training (common courses compulsory for all students of the Faculty of Arts offered by the Department of Philosophy and the Faculty of Sports, respectively) and to meet the Faculty's criteria concerning other foreign languages (min. 4 credits).

In order to be allowed to sit for the Bachelor's exam (AJL19999) at the end of the Bachelor's degree studies, a minimum of 170 credits must be gained.

The First Year of the studies of English Language and Literature is composed of compulsory courses with the following codes (37 credits total):

In the 2^nd and 3^rd years,students choose their own program each semester. Nevertheless, they must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Pass the compulsory courses Academic Writing (AJL13001) and Spoken Fluency (AJL11501) and finish them with exams.
2. Pass Introduction to Sociolinguistics (AJL12070) and finish it with an exam.
3. Pass two linguistic courses and finish them with exams. The codes for these courses begin AJL12xxx.
4. Pass two basic literary courses and finish them with exams; one of them dealing with the history of British literature (codes AJL14000 to AJL14007) and one with the history of American literature (codes AJL15000 to AJL15002).
5. Pass one cultural studies course and finish it with exams. The codes of these courses begin with AJL16xxx, AJL17xxx, and AJL18xxx.
6. Pass the exam in the Practical English Exam (AJL11010), normally at the end of the 4^th semester.
7. Pass the English Language Oral Proficiency Exam (AJL11020)
8. Gain at least 60 additional credits for courses offered at the Department of English and American Studies.
9. Gain at least 18 additional credits for any courses offered at Masaryk University.
  1. The Department recommends that students acquire these 18 credits, along with the 10 credits required by University and Faculty regulations (physical education, a second foreign language, and philosophy) during their first year of study.
10. Pass the Bachelor's Thesis Seminars (AJL19800, and AJL19801, 5 credits each) and write and defend a Bachelor's diploma thesis (AJL19850).
  The process of writing a B.A. major thesis usually lasts at least two semesters: in the first semester, the student prepares for writing and submits assignments in the electronic Thesis Seminar, and in the second semester, the student writes, finishes and hands in the thesis.

Eligibility Criteria

This fee-paying program is open to graduates of secondary schools holding a Czech maturita (secondary-school leaving exam) or an officially recognized equivalent from another country.

You do not have to come to Brno personally to take the entrance exam. The result of the admission process depends on the quality of the documents that you provide. Those will be assessed by the admission committee and you will be notified about the results via e-mail.

Meet the eligibility criteria set out in the paragraph above.
Submit of the electronic application in the Masaryk University Information System and pay the application fee.
Submit the required documents as described below.
Pass the entrance exam.

Required documents

Statement of Purpose (500 words maximum) in English, explaining why the applicant wishes to study in this degree program accredited in English and why the applicant wishes to study in this Department.
English-language certificate - not more than two years old at the time of the submission of the application:
- IELTS Academic - score of 6.5 or higher (min 6.0 in all sections)
- TOEFL iBT - score of 79 or higher
- Cambridge Certificates - B2 First (FCE) - with mark A or B, C1 Advanced (CAE), C2 Proficiency (CPE)
- Pearson PTE Academic - score of 56 or higher
- Applicants who have graduated from a secondary school in the following countries (the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand) and have attended the said school for two or more years, do not need to submit test scores.
Recommendation letter, written by a teacher/professor. Must have an official format – ideally on a letterhead, with original signature (no picture), and contact details (position, e-mail, telephone).
Transcript of secondary/high school grades with the titles of courses and examinations you completed.
Secondary/high school diploma – if you are yet to graduate, submit a confirmation of studies with the expected graduation date
Passport (EU citizens may replace it with the national ID)

Entrance exam

The evaluation of the applications will be done in two steps:

Evaluation of the submitted documents.
Selected candidates will be invited for an online interview.

Admission to study English Language and Literature will be offered to those applicants selected by the Department's Entrance Exam Committee, based on a complex evaluation of the applicant's language skills, recommendations, and motivation.

Application Filing Period

1 December - 30 April for the following academic year.

Documents set out above in the Terms of Admission are required to be provided in digital form and attached to the online application by April 30th.

Students who will need a visa to travel to CZ should apply as early as possible to increase their chance to arrive on time.

Recognition of Foreign Education

To be enrolled in a degree study program you have to present an acknowledgment certificate of your former education abroad. This proves that your previous studies are equal to a comparable Czech education and your diploma is valid in the Czech Republic.

Recognition of foreign education is a must along with the entrance exam. It is an administrative part of the admission procedure. No one can be enrolled in the studies without recognition of their previous foreign education.
