In the 15th century, Geneva was part of the Duchy of Savoy, a central European territory now divided between Switzerland, Italy, and France. Today, Geneva is recognised as a key crossroads within the duchy and in Europe, with a rich and qualitative artistic production. Yet, it has never been systematically examined as an artistic centre. This lecture seeks to address this gap by focusing on Jean Bapteur, the first local painter to serve the Duke of Savoy, whose career provides insight into Geneva’s artistic role within Central Europe.
