Research activities

• Adam Šumichrast is a doctoral candidate at the Institute of History (Masaryk University in Brno, Faculty of Arts) specializing in comparative labor and social history. His dissertation thesis explores the interactions between trade unions and power centers of the state, quotidian activities of the trade unions, their reception of state ideology and institutional structure in the context of dictatorial regimes in a comparative perspective mainly during the second world war. He deals with the impact of these regimes on labor movement and the processes leading to the emergence of new types of organizations which controls the labor force. He is also interested in research into industrial unrest and collective actions, including the present and especially in Slovakia and Czech Republic.

  • Proposal for Aktion Czech Republic-Austria, winter semester (2019/2020), Adam Šumichrast. Dissertation thesis: Comparison the development of trade unions in the Slovak state and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in comparative. In my dissertation project, in a comparative perspective, I deal with the development of a trade union movement in the Slovak state and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in the years 1939-1945. The basic research question is whether we can talk about transforming the trade unions or rather about their extirpation. I also analyze the basic features of trade union development in fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. These countries represented both the inspiration and the subsequent take-over and application of the patterns and mechanisms of operation in the regimes under examination. I examine the development of the trade union movement on the theoretical basis of authoritarian regimes and the theory of totalitarianism (its critical reception) and the resulting regime dynamics and its repercussions. I also notice the application of corporatism in the studied states as the phenomenon of the time. In terms of methodology, I use in particular a structuralist-analytical approach (inspired by Bielefeld school, for example), but in some moments, however, I also use elements of history from below or microhistory approaches. I also work with the concept of class. I set out three basic areas of research and subsequent comparative analysis. First area: the enterprise of the trade union itself - its activities, activities and political expressions. In this section I will also deal with the strike activity of the working class and its reasons and implications. In the second area, I focus on the ideological positions of the trade unions and how they reflected the ideology of the regime under which they acted. I will also be interested in mobilizing and ideologically disciplining the workers for the economic interests of the state. Finally, I would like to focus on the organizational structure of the trade unions and the number of members they have represented. The aim of the dissertation thesis will be to identify similarities and differences with focus on these three areas and the attempt to provide an explanation of the possible differences. Draft of activities in Austria My stay in Austria, at the University of Vienna, I would like to use in three ways. Firstly, I would like to examine the development of the trade unions in Austria, where we see a number of breaks, and I wonder how it affected the trade union movement. Mostly, the influence of austrofascism (the installed authoritarian regime and corporatist/catolic influence) = similarities with the Slovak state; and subsequently the situation after the anschluss, when the Nazi regime was incorporated into the examine sphere also in Austria = similarities with Protectorate Bohemia and Morava. The result could be innovative study, minimally in the context of Slovak and Czech historiography (potentially also a part of dissertation work). Many books, mostly German language origin (but also English), that I need for dissertation are unavailable in Czech and Slovak libraries. And finally, if it was possible, I would also like to visit some interesting methodologically oriented course at the university, from which I could get further inspiration.
