Popis A Novel O Escravo by the Portuguese writer José Evaristo d'Almeida was published in the year of 1856 when the Cape Verdean archipelago was part of the Portuguese Empire. O Escravo is the first novel with the Cape Verdean theme and it is also the first book written by Portuguese author whose hero is a black character, and on top of that, the main character of this book is a black slave whose morality surpasses morality of the European colonists. José Evaristo d'Almeida described in his novel the Cape Verdean environment with all its characteristics, he did not use the European colonialist perspective, appreciating the archipelago's mestic people and giving voice to the non-white characters. This work with romantic and realistic traits is the first fiction that begins with the dicussion of the problem that José Evaristo d'Almeida's literary successors of the twentieth century will try to solve - who is a Cape Verdean man and where he belongs.
