Popis The Baltic languages are relatively small in terms of the number of speakers, but they have always been and continue to be a rich source of linguistic data for etymologists. In the beginning, this article deals with their position within the system of Indo-European languages and it presents the main historical-linguistic context from the period of Proto-Indo-European to the period of the presumed East Baltic linguistic unity. Attention is paid primarily to the Lithuanian language and the role it played during the early stages of comparative Indo-European linguistics. The article describes the elements of archaism found on several levels of Lithuanian, and this aspect is also briefly examined in comparison with the second to these days surviving Baltic language, Latvian. The greater degree of archaism found in Lithuanian is mainly justified by its geographical isolation and greater resistance to foreign influences.
