| Popis | The study examines the issue of an unrealized state decoration planned in post-war Czechoslovakia—the Order of the President Liberator T. G. Masaryk, or alternatively the Czechoslovak Order of Merit. On the basis of a detailed analysis of archival sources, above all the minutes of the Order Commission at the Office of the Presidium of the Government, the author reconstructs the legislative, administrative, and artistic process involved in the preparation of this decoration in the years 1947–1948. The text situates the emergence of this initiative within the broader context of the development of the Czechoslovak system of state decorations between 1918 and 1948, pointing out its long-term shortcomings, in particular the absence of an award for civil merit, as well as the chaos caused by the accumulation of decorations from different periods. Special attention is devoted to discussions concerning the name, structure, numerus clausus, artistic design of the insignia, and the competencies of the individual state authorities. The conclusion addresses the question of why, despite advanced preparations, the order was never realized, identifying as the key factors the political change after February 1948 and the gradual adaptation of the Czechoslovak phaleristic system to the Soviet model. |
