Names as Literary Devices in Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s novel Good Omens

| Popis | The research aims to examine the impact of names and naming within the discourse of the novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman Good Omens. ?More specifically, the research aims to identify the ways names and naming influence the reader's interpretation of the novel and the narrative development. The research also explores how names and naming shape the main issue discussed in the novel, while at the same time navigating the plot built around the predeterminacy, or “ineffable plan”, and free will exercised by the protagonists. The research suggests that names can be powerful literary tools from the perspective of influence on the narrative and can create a separate discourse within the discourse of the novel due to the prior meaning they carry. Based on this prior knowledge, names become either obstacles or aegis for the story flow, and either providing a variety of development options or narrowing them down to one. The research is conducted using the methodological framework of names and naming traditions analysis earlier employed by ?Carole Houge, Terhi Aininala and Jan-Ola Östman. |
