| Popis | If it had stood today, the history of European architecture would probably look completely different. The sacred building, whose foundations archaeologists discovered at Vyšehrad, has not only failed to survive to the present day, but most likely never even existed. The foundations uncovered during the excavations were never supplemented with further masonry throughout history. Nevertheless, they indicate that this unfinished project may have been the most ambitious the Czech lands experienced under the Přemyslid rulers. Today, we can only ask why the princes of the tenth century ultimately abandoned the idea of a monumental tetraconch sanctuary. Archaeologist Jiří Macháček and art historian Ivan Foletti discuss this with another special guest, archaeologist Ladislav Varadzin. At Vyšehrad, he discovered not only this unfinished church but, unintentionally, also some gold. If you thought after the previous episode that Vyšehrad could no longer surprise you, you might be amazed while listening to the 56th episode of the podcast Středověk (jinak). |
