| Popis | This study examines the earliest known colour photograph of Tibetan Buddhism’s most sacred statue, Jowo Rinpoche, which, according to local legend, has been housed in the main temple of Lhasa and Tibet, Jokhang, since the 7th century and resides there to this day. The photograph was taken on 23 December 1954 by the cameraman Josef Vaniš. Vaniš and the director Vladimír Sís were the first Czechoslovak visitors to Tibet, where they filmed an hour-long colour documentary Cesta vede do Tibetu (The Road Leads to Tibet). Apart from the circumstances surrounding the photograph’s creation, other matters are both interesting and informative, such as its publication history with more or less accurate captions, and especially its unexpected current use in Tsuglakhang, the main temple of exiled Tibetans, in Dharamsala, India. The study also provides new information about a Tibetan civil servant, Wangdu Norbu Kyibug, who held the title Rimzhi and played an important role in the creation of the photograph. |
