Popis The article deals with the biography of Jiří Veltruský (1919–1994), otherwise known as Paul Barton, a theatre semiotician, journalist and trade union representative, exploring not just the events of his life but the various networks he was part of. Building on both previous biographies and new original research, it raises conceptual questions about his identity as an exile after 1948 and his unique trajectory and behavioural strategies. Based on new archival material, the article revisits and expands the understanding of Veltruský, situating him within broader scholarly exile networks. The article discusses Veltruský’s life choices and compares these to those of other exiled scholars.
