Popis The presentation will examine the artistic work of the Czech(-Slovak) theatre director, Peter Scherhaufer (1942-1999), who was a co-founder of the experimental theatre company Goose on the String (Husa na provázku) in 1968. Scherhaufer's work was significantly influenced by Russian avant-garde theatre, particularly the works of V. E. Meyerhold and S. Eisenstein, which served as a crucial source of inspiration and fascination. I will trace the influences from the artist's early work, including 11 Days of Battleship Potemkin (1971), Commedia dell'arte (1974) and the version of Brecht's Wedding (1978), to the Scherhaufer's big street/open-air performances in the 1990s. The most spectacular of these events was BOCATIUS 98, a performance subtitled “an open-air environment”, which took place on the main square of the regional centre of Košice, in eastern Slovakia. This unique event, which was performed on a single occasion, employed a variety of visual elements, puppets, mechanical devices and over 500 performers to recount the historical narrative of the town. Scherhaufer incorporated practical lessons in the principles of street theatre in his innovative version of theatre directing programme, which he established in the early 1990s at the Theatre Faculty in Brno. He also dedicated lectures and papers to this theme. The material under consideration provides a unique opportunity to examine Scherhaufer's interpretation of Eisenstein's concept of "theatre of attractions". It also allows for an analysis of the manner in which he incorporates and transforms this concept into his own artistic praxis, and the development of his own interpretation of the concept over time.
