A paradigm shift? Translations of Russian books and reviews of Russian literature in the Czech environment since 2022

| Popis | The present study is a continuation of the author's previous research on the translation of Russian literature into Czech, as previously presented at the OLD conference. The present study examines the impact of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine on the publication of translations from Russian. The study also examines how Russian literature is presented in key Czech cultural periodicals. Initially, the paper will focus on the number of books translated and the range of topics they cover. A total of 223 book translations were analysed. Following February 2022, a decline in the number of translations from Russian into Czech was observed. In the non-fiction translation segment, a diverse array of books representing diametrically opposed ideological positions emerged, ranging from the Czech translation of Putin's Munich speech from 2007 to a book authored by the murdered agent and Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko. It is notable that certain works, including Sergei Kara-Murza's treatise on Soviet civilisation, have been employed to advance the official Russian perspective on historical interpretation. Conversely, interest in Russian literature, particularly in prose, rose. A review of recent translations reveals a discernible shift in the political orientations of literary interpretation, with reviewers increasingly seeking to elucidate the causes of Russian imperialism and aggression through the lens of literature. Conversely, certain reviews exhibit a complete disregard for political criteria, effectively isolating the literary works of contemporary Russian authors from the political context of the Russian state. These reviews, in effect, portray literature as the nation's critical conscience. |
