Prof. Brenda Flanagan
(Davidson College, North Carolina, U.S.A.)

Gorkeho 7, Brno

   Brenda Flanagan was born in Trinidad but currently resides in Davidson, North Carolina, USA. A prolific writer, Flanagan has received numerous awards and has published a vast array of plays, short stories and one novel. She is currently Professor of English at Davidson College in North Carolina, where she teaches Caribbean and African-American literature, as well as Creative Writing. Her latest books: novel You Alone Are Dancing (1990) and collection of short stories "In Praise of Island Women and Other Crimes" (2004).
   In February 2003, the United States State Department named Dr. Flanagan as the first African-American/Caribbean writer to serve as a cultural ambassador to Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan since the demise of the Soviet Union. Flanagan also visited Chad as a cultural ambassador in 2003 and Panama in February 2004. After studying Czech on a Global Partners Fellowship at Beloit College in summer 2003, Dr. Flanagan has resumed her study of the Czech Surrealist writer Eva Svankmajerova. She visited the Czech Republic several times in the past ten years.

Two scholarships have been received for the autumn semester to study

British culture, history and literature
at the
International Study Centre
of Queen's University (Canada),
at Herstmonceux Castle, Sussex, England.

The scholarship includes tuition and fees (approximately $5,000 Canadian), transportation costs and room and board.
Further information on the Centre, including the curriculum for the autumn, can be found at their web site: http://www.queensu.ca/isc/ or by contacting Radka Flejberková or Marie Okáčová, who have just returned from a semester at the Centre.
These scholarships are limited to current 2nd and 3rd year students.

Your application should include:
1) CV (including your address, email, etc.)
2) A one-page statement describing why you are interested in this programme.
3) A list of your marks and your overall grade point average in our department.

1) CV (including your address, email, etc.)
2) A description of your academic goals (a project statement)
3) A list of your marks and your overall grade point average in our department.

4) Activity in the Department 10%

Dr. Jervis will be discussing American foreign policy in the context of the new administration of President Bush, post-Cold War Europe and NATO expansion. Dr. Jervis received his Ph.D. at Temple University in Philadelphia and has taught at universities in the United States, South Africa and Croatia. He is currently a Civics Education Fellow at the Center for U. S. Studies of the Leucorea Foundation at Martin Luther University, Germany. The lecture will be in English.

    1. Note: you must get the appropriate form for 'closing' your 'index' from the secretary , fill it in, and hand in it and your 'index' to dr. Zemenová by Wednesday 6 September; she will see to the actual 'closing'.

  • The applicants must have finished their 1st year (and passed the Qualifying exam)
  • Each student is eligible for only one Erasmus stay during the course of their studies
    A formal application (in English), addressed to the head of the department, must be received by the department secretary no later than Monday, 5 June 2000. The application should include:

    Professor Firbas was a member of the Prague Linguistic Circle, the Societas europa linguistica, and many other Czech, Czechoslovak and international associations and the recipient of numerous awards. Professor Firbas was also the long-time editor-in-chief of Brno Studies in English and a member of the editorial boards of other notable publications.
