We are a faculty with heart in the right place

Dear students, colleagues,

I greet you at a time when the clear days are getting shorter and shorter and the afternoon fog and early dusk often shake hands in the sky. One can easily fall into gloomy thoughts in such scenery. However, when I look back on this year at our faculty, joy and hope rather than gloom prevail in me. For this year we have proven that our faculty is made up of people with their hearts in the right place. When the war in Ukraine began in February, our psychologists immediately set up a crisis helpline, and numerous volunteers from your ranks began organizing fundraisers, helping with interpreting, teaching Czech, babysitting Ukrainian children, and finding other ways to support those in need. In short, you have shown that you are not indifferent to the plight of others.

Although we are in a time when darkness seems to be winning over the light, I perceive that the light has certainly not disappeared. It still rests firmly in good people. And when Lucia, whose name is derived from the Latin word for light, comes and, according to the folk proverb, drinks the night away, it will mean that the visible daylight around us will soon be extended as well. As in previous years, we can shorten the wait by meeting over a glass of wine. This year, this lovely faculty tradition will be made more enjoyable by the performance of the Ensemble Versus choir, which is affiliated with the Institute of Musicology of the Faculty of Music of MU. I cordially invite you all.

However, if by chance we do not meet over a glass of wine this year, I wish you a peaceful Christmas and joy and hope throughout the new year!

Irena Radová
Dean of the Faculty of Arts MU
