The aim of the doctoral project of the Institute of Translation Studies at Charles University and the Department of English and American Studies at Masaryk University is to explore the status of literary translation in Czech society after
1945. In the first phase, a modern interactive database of all translators and published translations – both in book form and in periodicals – will be created on the basis of the bibliography Czech Literary Translation after 1945, administered by the Czech Translators’ Guild. The data collected during the work (including interviews with eyewitnesses based on the method of oral history) will then be elaborated both in separate articles on methods in translation history and in a monograph dealing with the role of the most important publishing houses and main translators in the development of literary translation of the given period. The project will thus significantly contribute not only to research in Translation Studies – as the database will be made available to both specialists in the field and to the general public – but also to the
ongoing reflections on modern Czech cultural history.
