Samurai Culture Week: Japanese sword - the soul of a samurai

  • 16 November 2021
    4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
  • Lecture Hall B2.13

The traditional Japanese sword - katana - is one of the most famous symbols of the samurai class. It is renowned not only as a perfect instrument of war but also as a technologically exceptional work of art with extraordinary aesthetic value. We will talk about the production process and the aesthetic dimension of sword blades with Pavel Bolf, a leading Czech manufacturer of Japanese swords.

The lecture is part of a series of five lectures and discussions on samurai culture, both material (the Japanese sword and its accessories) and spiritual and symbolic (history, humor, depiction of the samurai). The aim of the series is to introduce the knowledge of Japanese culture in the tradition of the Faculty of Arts of MU, which has long sought to be a bridge between nations and cultures through mutual understanding.

The event is part of the celebration of the centenary of the beginning of teaching at the Faculty of Arts and the Humanities Week.
