Do you want to learn more about the faculty's academic community and make new contacts? Are you interested in what colleagues from other departments are working on, or would you like to present your projects? Or do you want to spend a pleasant morning in the company of people with something to say? The new discussion platform Faculty Inspiration is just for you. This time, David Zbíral from the Department for the Study of Religions will focus, among other things, on working with data in the humanities.

The future of network analysis in data-hungry humanities

Humanities provide a unique skill set necessary for drawing reliable data from textual records of the human past. However, it is only when humanities become data-hungry that real cross-fertilization between qualitative and quantitative approaches can happen. This lecture draws especially on examples from the Dissident Networks Project to illustrate how social network analysis informs our understanding of the social fabric of premodern religious dissidence and interaction within inquisition trials, if it is used not merely to visualise data but to gain understanding unavailable to the naked eye.
