The project will comprise research on the general theory of art, the aesthetics and the art
criticism of Miroslav Tyrš (1832 – 1884). It will analyze these areas in Tyrš’s works, their
context, possible sources of inspiration, and their influence or connection with his other areas of
interest, especially physical training in the Sokol movement. The research will also focus on the
discussion of Tyrš’s ideas in later scholarly literature, including art criticism, as well as possible
parallels to today’s discussions about the aesthetics of the human body and physical training.
The main result of the project will be a monograph on Tyrš’s thinking, its roots, subsequent
scholarly discussion of his ideas, and possible parallels in contemporary art theory and
aesthetics.
