Description The polonistics at the Masaryk University has been existing in various shapes since the academic year 1923/24. The most difficult period in its history were years of normalisation, when the development of the field practically stopped in the consequence of the political interventions. The consequences of these negative phenomenons became fully evident at the beginning of the 90s of the 20th century. The issue was the low number of students made by various limitations and irregular intaking, non-existence of middle generation of teachers, reduction of the long ago rich scientific contacts and student exchanges, neglecting the polonistics libraries or interruption of some directions of scientific researches. In the last 20 years most of these problems were solved. With regard to the number of students, education of future academic workers, with regard to the foreign cooperation or equipment of libraries is the contemporary polonistics a standard field. Also the polonistics of today need not expend most of its power to the salvation of its existence, but it can actively take part in the formation of the contemporary humanistic education and research.
