| Description | The ensemble of the three privileges (bulls) issued on 26 September 1212 in Basel was labelled as first charters that Frederick II of Sicily dated on the German soil. It has probably been modern historiography that examined the charters of Basel to the greatest extent. The charter given to King of Bohemia, even entered Czech national memory and under the name of the Golden Bull of Sicily became the proof that the "Czech state" gained full or almost full independence on the Holy Roman Empire as early as the Middle Ages. Thus, this document was sacralised as a lieu de memoir of the modern Czech nation and became an elementary part of education. Based on these circumstances, the critical analysis of the ensemble of the privileges of Basel was realized at three levels. First, the events were examined that had preceded the issuance of the charters an influenced their form and style. Second, the fate of the privileges in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times was observed. Finally, the exposition concentrated on the apparent contradiction between the subordinate role which the charters occupied in their time and the significance attributed to them in the 20th century. |
