Description The aim of the contribution is to reflect the stereotype of Poland as a uniform country as far as its nationality is concerned. It is a fact that the population of Poland became one of the most ethnically homogeneous in the world as a result of the radically altered borders after World War II and the subsequent migrations, however, the national and ethnic minorities constitute about 1,5 % (according to the census data) to 3 % (estimated) of the general population. The author attempts to define 7 basic periods in the development of the Polish state's relationship to the national and ethnic minorities after 1945. Selected regulations referring to the rights of minorities are also included and discussed.
