Description The contribution discusses the prospects for shale gas in central Europe primarily from the perspective of the potential impacts of unconventional gas production in other parts of the world on this region. An analysis of the circumstances under which shale gas is produced in the US indicates that gas availability and perception in central Europe can also change even if there is no commercial production in this region in the end. If some of the serious forecasts actually materialise, the US can become a major gas supplier for Europe. The geopolitical implications of this possibility would be far reaching and a change in the perception of gas as a problematic feedstock can also influence central European countries’ energy policies.
