Description The presentation deals with information control in questions raised by legal counsel in courtroom interrogation. It starts by contrasting the classifications of question types in legal manuals and in linguistically oriented studies, pointing out that while the former tend to concentrate on the effect that questions achieve (i.e., the response elicited), the latter are more concerned with their grammatical form. Adopting a classification that reflects both the formal aspects of questions and the degree of information control they exert, it is shown how the two main stages of courtroom interrogation – direct and cross examination – differ in the lawyers’ preference for particular question types.
