Description The stimulus for this article was a record of the year 1450 in the book of testaments from Znojmo, where the foundation of the municipal library in Znojmo, situated in the parochial church of St Nicolas, is mentioned. The library was established on the grounds of the testament of Michal of Břest, protonotary of King Sigismund. His bequest of 14-16 manuscripts became the basis of the library. The author pays attention to the figure of Michal of Břest, to his career in the chancery of the Roman King Sigismund and to his testamentary bequests to the church of St Nicolaus in Znojmo, where Michal not only established the library, but also provided funds for anniversary masses. Finally the author concentrates on a detailed analysis of the list of books bequeathed by Michal and puts it into context of the book culture in Moravian Catholic cities during the Hussite revolution.
