Description The publication attempts to provide a complex introduction into albanology; it deals with the Albanian language, literature, history and culture. The first part overviews the development of the scholarly interest in the Albanians in a global as well as domestic context. The second part focuses on the questions connected with the Albanian people and their origin and on the historical period of the national revival from mid-nineteenth century to the declaration of the independent Albanian state in 1912. The third part summarizes basic characteristics of the Albanian language in terms of the classification of languages and historical development of Albanian with a special attention to the process of standardization of the written language. The next part deals with the ancient Albanian literature until the eighteenth century. The handbook also includes an Albanian-Czech dictionary of linguistic terms.
