Description A hypothesis which can be used for quantitative description of the forest ecosystems state is presented. The hypothesis is based on general systems theory, the concept of self-organization and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The main idea of the hypothesis is based on the assumption that the forest ecosystems in which evolution takes place, can be described as systems that approaches certain goals. The hypothesis assumes that the goals relating to the energy, material flows and recycling can be mathematically expressed as the set of parameters which expresses the optimal using of energy resources and important nutrient with relation to the habitat conditions. The paper presents a way how to express this optimal using of resources by measurable quantities. The deeper elaboration of this idea leads us to the possibility to determine the stability of the forest ecosystem by a quantitative way. Then, the stability is defined as a measure the degree of the suitability of the forest ecosystem in relation to the habitat conditions. It also expresses probability of resistance of the forest ecosystem to the impact of a random stressor.
