Citation
Description The chapter illustrates the ritual character of some barbarian laws, using the example of Pactus legis Salicae. It is concerned especially on the norms regarding the judicial state organs surviving in the rule of the nobility (centenarius, thunginus) and the norms connected to the meetings of the assembly of all free warriors (thing). It indicates that the law perceived as ritual appears not only in the well-known paragraph "De chrene cruda". The recognition of the ritual character of some parts of old Germanic law could be helpful to the improvement of correct methodological research of so called "barbarian" law codices (better differentiation of the norms of custom law and royal law).
