Description The study shows a different attitude of the state to immigration in the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Naturally, the state motivated economically motivated immigration and, moreover, deputed emissaries abroad to recruit qualified people and bring them to the country. The author documents the by then unknown, state supported, issue of co-ordinated illegal recruitment of qualified labour force, using the example of two groups of Dutch specialists for the textile factory in Náměšť. The attitude of the state to the unwelcome immigrants from the territories controlled by the troops of the revolutionary France is analyzed, using the example of French priests in Brno and of an Alsace military surgeon who was forced to join the colours of the Austrian armed forces.
