| Description | Body positions, postures and movements are used in many religious rituals. From the point of view of given religious tradition, such manipulation with own body is usually understood as an expression of certain attitude or emotion. From the point of view of the Grounded cognition theory, those manipulations could be understood not only as means of expression, but also as sources inducing specific states and feelings, influencing somatic processes and cognitive appraisal. Be it the bodily position itself, or bodily position located in specific space or even the metaphorical language concerning bodily position and size – all those bring many interesting questions; questions that can be answered thanks to the grounded cognition theory and experimental research program. Why do we often kneel when communicating with deities and superhuman beings? Why are the statues of deities placed above heads of believers? Could grandiose size of temples and churches lead to specific experiences? Why are morality controlling deities usually residing in heavens? |
