Description Esophageal cancer is disease with very poor prognosis. There are two main types of esophageal carcinoma: adenocarcinoma (EAC) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The aim of this study is to identify potential microRNA (miRNA) as biomarkers of esophageal cancer. Our results indicate a significantly decreased expression of miR-205 in EAC patients (n=22) in comparison with adjacent mucosa and significantly decreased expression of miR-205 in EAC patients in comparison with ESSC (n=22).Increased level of miR-205 is associated with a significantly better overall survival of EAC patients. Experimentally decreased level of anti-miR-205 in ESCC cell line was significantly affecting cell proliferation, migration and anchorage independent growth. Conversely, experimental increase of miR-205 in EAC cell line leads to decrease in cell proliferation and cell migration. This study may suggest the possibility of using miR-205 as biomarker for more reliable diagnosis of esophageal cancer and distinguishing of EAC from ESCC.
