Description In this paper, I compare the first chapter of Nise Murasaki inaka Genji to corresponding passages of The Tale of Genji and afterwards compare the used techniques to the techniques used in Nise monogatari, a parody of The Tales of Ise from the first half of the Edo period. In doing so I explore how Ryutei Tanehiko, the author of Nise Murasaki inaka Genji, abandoned parody and devised his own style of adapting classical literature.
