Description Multi-year gymnasia are a specific and debatable feature of the Czech educational system. It is difficult to understand the debates on their existence without some knowledge of the historical context. This paper aims to survey their historical evolution, their changing position in the Czech educational system, and the data accessible on this type of education. The attempts to abolish multi-year gymnasia are often linked with the aim of equalizing education. The paper concludes by identifying areas which should be researched in the context of the feud over multi-year gymnasia.
