Description The paper focuses on the mosaics of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, in Ravenna and reconsiders the role of the figure of Saint Apollinaris which is in the center of the composition of the mosaic of the apse. The visual emphasis on saint Apollinaris, the first bishop of Ravenna, has to be understood within the context of the claims for a larger independence of the bishopric of this city. The mystical and liturgical value of the mosaic are also to be considered.
