Description The Czech presence in Bulgaria after 1878 was quite significant and is considered to be one factor in the advancement of Bulgarian society. The most fundamental contribution of Czechs working in Bulgaria is seen to be in the area of education. Despite this, we still lack statistical information giving the number of Czech teachers at Bulgarian schools. The study presented partially fills this gap. Using annual reports available from individual schools, the author has created statistics on the presence of Czechs and other foreigners at boys´ high schools (Gymnasia) in Bulgarian school system in that period. The motives behind Czech teachers´decisions to work in Bulgaria are of special interest. The study is an important foundation for an upcoming dissertation that will map out the activities of Czech teachers, lawyers, engineers, and architects in this Balkan country.
