Citation
Description The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the most important architectural monuments of Brno, and at the same time to ponder on the criteria for their selection (monument protection status, mentioning in professional literature, etc.) Among the most prized are Gothic-style monuments (the most ancient part of the Old Town Hall, Monastic Church in the Old Brno), monuments of late Gothic period (St. Jacob's Church, portal and gate door of the Old Town Hall) and monuments of functionalist architecture (particularly Villa Tugendhat). Still, the range of monuments in Brno is very diverse (there are often diverse monuments even in one street), thus creating a specific synthesis of individual buildings which originally represented opposite architectural concepts. Mainly historicist and Art Nouveau architecture are represented by coherent sets of buildings in Brno. The object of reflection is creating so called canon of the most important artistic monuments since its beginnings at the manuscript of a well educated Brno sculptor Andreas Schweigl at the end of the 18th century.
