Description The paper deals mainly with methods of analysis and evaluation of an assemblage of archaeological finds, and is targeted at early medieval pottery. The aim is to summarise the system of analyses and evaluation with respect to pottery and the processing of the voluminous set of data obtained. The paper also familiarises readers with the very interesting locality of Kostice – Zadní hrúd in the Lower Dyje region and with its assemblage of 10th–12th century ceramic finds, which has enhanced our previous knowledge of the development of South Moravian pottery in the given area at that time. The excavations carried out at this site have provided a great deal of new knowledge on settlement development in the Lower Dyje region. Due to the uniqueness of its finds, Kostice–Zadní hrúd is classed among the most interesting and most extensively-examined localities of the post-Great Moravian and Late Hillfort Periods (10th – 12th century).
