Description The paper first introduces the notion of TEXT in the Japanese context and the evolution of the concept of "subject" in the historical perspectiv (both in the West and in Japan). Next, it introduces the importance of the subject's role in the interpretation of a japanese text. It is pointed out that when interpreting a japanese text, the awareness of a subject is essential, since "subjective construal" forms the base in the construction of the meaning of a text in Japanese.
