Description The genre of diary belongs with its character to the most subjective genres of autobiography. In the present study the author deals with the biography and diaries written by Slovak realistic writer Elena Maróthy-Šoltésová (1855 –1939). The diary by Šoltésová My Children is compared to Dostoyevsky's Diary of a Writer. The author pays attention to the genesis, composition, genre and topics of both diaries, revealing their genre and compositional individuality or thematic similarities, biographical connections between Šoltésová and Dostoyevsky.
