Description Current paper focuses on the usage of foreign proper names in Russian texts from different eras (19th – 21st centuries). In the text we compare the way of handling with non-Russian proper names (names of companies, brands, periodicals, books) in pre-revolutionary Russian texts, in the texts written during the USSR times and in the documents of present days. The study tries to answer the question why during some periods the proper names were translated, at another time they were mostly processed by means of transcription or transliteration and why today we can see a big trend to leave a word in its original form (latin script) even if the target text is written in cyrillic.
