Description The celebrations of the hundredth anniversary of Bedřich Smetana’s birth in 1924 were a manifestation of the respect the nation held for their genius, which was also somewhat related to the patriotism typical of the early years of the First Republic period of Czechoslovakia. The magnitude of the celebrations, which affected all areas of art, shows that this jubilee made an unmistakable mark on the cultural scene throughout the country. The impact of activities such as these remains even now as testimony to the recognition that was accorded the composer in his homeland many years after his death. The greatest attention was focused on the central event of the festivities – the celebratory performance of all of Smetana’s operas in the National Theatre, which the audience could attend in chronological order from 23 April to 12 May.
