Description The sound system of Modern Czech includes two liquids /r/ and /l/ which are non-syllabic like consonants and syllabic like vowels. It is shown that traditional descriptions of the distribution of the variants must be revised and made more precise in order to account for their occurrence and function in words like stárl, umrlčí, zrdousit, předlhůtní. The paper suggests that it is more fruitful to rely on a purely phonological notion of nuclearity, and that the domain of syllabicity/nuclearity needs to be redefined.
