Description Author in his article attempts to describe the real role of the Byzantine empire on genesis of the first crusade, because the knowledge about it is not so generally widespread. Besides of the role of the pope Urban II it was mainly the actions of the byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos, which "provoked" the launching of the crusade. But the attitude and aims of the Byzantines were very different of the final form of the crusade as we know it from historical sources. Alexios Komnenos originally wanted to achieve the arrival of several mercenary units with which he would bolster his own army before finally recapturing the lost byzantine territories in Asia Minor.
