Description The study focuses on the theme of Jacob’s dislocated hip in the stories of Bruno Schulz’s books Cinnamon shops and Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass and its image in the kabbalistic work Orchard of Pomegranates by Moshe Cordovero. First of all it introduces the principles of Lurianic Kabbalah, by which Bruno Schulz was inspired in his stories – namely the principle of Sefirot or spiritual worlds, as well as the theory of creation of the world (tzimtzum), a cosmic catastrophe (shevirat ha-kelim) and its restoration (tikkun). Subsequently the study defines the term tzaddik or righteous man, whose attributes will be shown on the character of Jacob’s father. The theme of Jacob’s hip is then analyzed in the broader context of Jacob’s wrestling with a mysterious stranger, on the basis of a comparison with the biblical archetype in Jacob’s wrestling on the Jabbok and the kabbalistic image in Moshe Cordovero’s Orchard of Pomegranates.
