| Description | Rutilius Namatianus in his poem De reditu suo portrays the rural and urban landscape of the fifth century AD, marked by barbarian invasions and economic decline. With a similar description can we met by other ancient authors for example: Aurelius Ambrosius, Ausonius, Paulinus of Nola, but also in a legal document such as Codex Theodosianus or Codex Iustinianus. We have, therefore, on the basis of the written reports featuring landscape 5th century full of abandoned ruins of the once great and glorious cities and destroyed rural areas? Or was exceptional cases, literary topoi? In this paper I will focus on "the phenomenon of" dying cities in late antiquity. Based on data from archaeological excavations, and contemporary written sources acquainted the audience with the possible causes of the decline and fall of urban centers in northern Italy in the 5th century AD |
