Description The aim of this article is to show the significance of a “dream” of modernist priests about changes inside the Roman Catholic Church which would have led to the democratisation and modernisation of the Church. This vision was very important for several generations of modern-minded clergymen and had a powerful influence on the religious situation in the first years of Czechoslovakia when it culminated with formation of the Czechoslovak Church in 1920. The article focuses especially on the period between 1918 and 1920 when the Czech modernist movement was on its height and separated itself from the Roman Catholic Church after failed negotiation with the Vatican.
